Paul Glennon from Oxigen Environmental and Orange Skip Hire was on hand to present the club with the latest Best of the Boyne Green Award, in association with Drogheda and District Chamber.

The club has undertaken a series of measures, aimed at creating awareness of global warming and at the same time, save a fortune on their monthly bills.

Solar panels help with cost cutting during the warmer months, and with a heat pump installed, LED floodlights, a new EV charging point being installed, bat and swift boxes, an insect hotel, an eco-friendly pathway, a hedgerow and other projects ongoing or in the pipeline, the club is as sustainable as they come.

But they are not content with sitting on their laurels. They want to spread the message far and wide to other clubs and organisations – get organised, save money and help ensure the future sustainability of their group.

Greg Doran has worked hard on the total revamp of what the club was and what it is today.

“We had a diesel generator to power the floodlights and that’s now gone. There have been huge changes and we wanted to do it to reduce our monthly bills and play our path in supporting biodiversity and helping the environment,” he stated.

They would be delighted to talk to other clubs and organisations about their journey and the huge benefits gained.

Greg took on the role of the energy champion in many ways and that was vital. “You need someone who is not involved in the day to day operation. It takes time to do the grant applications and other things, but getting someone with an interest in the environment is huge. We’d gladly assist,” he stated.

The club feels showing that they are climate aware gives a good image to those coming up the ranks and makes people think more about the planet and playing a part in its future.

“On behalf of the chamber and Oxigen Environmental, it was a pleasure to visit Cupra Park and meet the team at Drogheda Town. They are trailblazers in many ways and let’s hope they get the full support their energy and enthusiasm deserves,” chamber CEO, Hubert Murphy, stated.
