Andrew Watters gave his final salute on a distinguished 40-year career in An Garda Siochana
recently, but not before accepting a token of appreciation from Drogheda and District Chamber in the shape of a well-deserved BD sponsored ‘Community Champion’ award. The awards recognise those that go the extra mile in the service of others and Supt Watters certainly did that.
He policed with common sense and that attitude served him well, from his days in the Ballymun
of old, to tackling Drogheda’s feud. In between, he changed lives and saved lives, the true professional who led from the front.
His career spanned four decades – his first night on the job being a chance checkpoint meeting
with Martin ‘The General’ Cahill. His time in Drogheda has helped mould the town into a resilient place that has taken the hits and come through the other side.
Outside of the day job, he served in numerous sectors and continues his love of cycling, being a
former All-Ireland champion on the bike.
“Andrew and the force in the Drogheda region has served us well and we wish him the very best
of health and good fortune in his retirement,” chamber CEO, Hubert Murphy,
stated.
Catherina McGuirk,Plant Manager, BD, echoed those words and said the area owes Andrew a debt of gratitude for his sterling efforts down the years on behalf of the people of
the region.
