DROGHEDA CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
Ireland’s Ancient East prepares for the festive season as the Drogheda Christmas Festival launches the first magical event of its kind. Building on the momentum of the successful Fleadh Cheoil, a music festival which brought an astonishing 700,000 people to the historic town of Drogheda, the christmas festival is expected to bring thousands back to the historical town.
The Drogheda Christmas Festival will be taking place from Friday December 6th to Sunday December 8th. Supported by the Louth City Council and sponsored by The D Hotel, Scotch Hall, Drogheda Credit Union and other local brands, some of Drogheda’s biggest tourist attractions and shopping destinations will be magically transformed into a winter wonderland.
This family-friendly event will see Mr. & Mrs. Claus making an appearance in front of a beautiful display of lights on St. Peter’s Church, West Street where visitors will also get the chance to enjoy a Christmas market of over 50 of the highest quality craft and food exhibitions.
The promenade at the D Hotel and Scotch Hall Shopping Centre will see a stunning vintage carousel, an outdoor cinema which will screen some of the best Christmas films, live music & entertainment, a mini Christmas village and much more!
Commenting on the launch of the Drogheda Christmas Festival, Noel McArdle, chairman of the committee, said: ‘When the Fleadh came to Drogheda at first, I could see the people of Drogheda coming together and it reminded me of back when we had the Bonanza years ago growing up in Drogheda. I happened to meet Frank Godfrey and I said what we should be thinking about doing is having a Christmas festival for Drogheda. We have historical infrastructure as well as the train links and the bus links. We also have the goodwill of the people of the town.’
In speaking to LMFM on the new festivities launching in Drogheda, Declan Power, Councillor at Louth County Council, said: ‘It’s a very family-orientated event and there’s something there for everybody. This is for the people of Drogheda and in the lead up to Christmas it is a welcome booth for the traders of the town as well. Drogheda needs this.’
Drogheda Christmas Festival will take place on the following dates:
- Friday 6th December: 12 noon - 7pm
- Saturday 7th December: 11am - 6pm
- Sunday 8th December: 11am - 6pm
