Press Release June 12 2020
The 126th Annual General Meeting of Drogheda and District Chamber was held on Thursday June 11th. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, for the first time, the AGM was held remotely co-ordinated by Chamber Secretary, Breanndán Casey, using ‘Zoom’ technology. Over forty members participated in the meeting which was addressed at the outset by the Mayor, Councillor Kevin Callan.
The incoming President for 2020/21, Robert Murray, thanked Shona McManus for her exceptional contribution in elevating the profile of Drogheda during her term as President and looks forward to continuing that great work over the coming 12 months, with Shona remaining firmly on the team, “It’s a very proud day for me, as I take the leap into this new role and I’m extremely grateful to my employer for their support and encouragement. My background is in Sales & Marketing in the Financial Services Industry (Asset Finance) and I hope to apply my skills and experience built up over the past 20 years to enhance and develop the Chamber – alongside a solid Council team – whilst improving Drogheda’s economic development position and outlook”.
The Chamber reported a healthy financial position and Manager Irene McKeown reported that membership had grown during 2019 to almost 200. She detailed a wide range of events that the Chamber had organised or supported, including the inaugural North East Business Excellence Awards attended by over 400 guests. “We are grateful to all sponsors of events during the year, with particular thanks to premier sponsor, Flogas”, concluded Irene.
The Chamber also played a key role in developing the M1 Corridor and the M1 Drogheda Chamber Skillnet, which is providing a growing range of training courses and events for businesses across the North East and beyond. “In recent times, over 400 staff from 160 companies have availed of our Skillnet programmes and it is proving to be a key regional training resource as we recover from Covid-19 and further prepare for Brexit,” said Linda Ennis, M1 Drogheda Chamber Skillnet Training Manager.
Outgoing Chamber President Shona McManus paid tribute to her fellow Council members, staff, sponsors and media partners – all of whom had contributed to a very successful year. “The ever increasing level of collaboration and pride along with a positive, ambitious, driven and entrepreneurial spirit that has always been at the heart of Drogheda is evident now more than ever as we all work our way through the Covid-19 Pandemic together. It is with genuine pride and honour that I have served as President for Drogheda & District Chamber for the past 2 years representing our Council, our members, local business, our community, Drogheda and the wider region at both a local and national level. It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I look forward to continuing my work with the Chamber and Council whilst supporting Robert Murray in his new role as President and Miriam Simon as Vice President over the coming year.’’
